Patchwork Dentistry

Now and again, a new patient will make their way to our dental office, more often than not, by way of referral from a concerned family member or friend. Sometimes it will be an immediate dental emergency, while, at other times, for an overall assessment of the current condition of their teeth.

In the case of the latter type of patient,  they are usually seeking to deal with their ongoing dental problems once and for all! We see weary, frustrated individuals who have had “Patchwork” dental care in the past. This term is used to describe a person’s previous dental work which has mainly consisted of a series of  temporary fixes for problems that, ideally, should have been restored with high-quality, longer term dental solutions. It is not uncommon to see patients who have had two, three or even four separate fillings all placed within the same tooth!

11-22-2013 1-02-35 PMPatchwork dentistry involves short term solutions to long term issues.
Quick fixes will
never solve a patient’s underlying problem.

Patients usually choose cheaper treatment options due to finances, limitations in their insurance benefits or lack of understanding of the long term consequences of short term fixes. Your needs may often be different from what is covered by your dental plan. When a dentist recommends dental treatment they are looking out for your best interests going forward and not your insurer’s bottom dollar!

Sometimes, a patient may be unaware that they have received patchwork dental treatment. If the benefits of high quality dental care was not explained properly or if ideal treatment was not offered to them, they may have chosen inferior treatment without even realizing it. This can be problematic for the new dentist because he has essentially inherited someone else’s dentistry. In this situation, a dentist must, out of good conscience and concern for a patient’s dental well-being, explain to them the condition of their mouth. Sadly, this can leave a patient completely blind-sided or overwhelmed with the realities of their current dental health.

Although dentists do their best to explain the necessary treatment so a patient can make an informed decision sometimes that advice is ignored. When treatment is delayed, eventually the patient will pay the price  – both in terms of discomfort and higher dental costs associated with further dental breakdown.

Of course, the decision to move forward or not with treatment is always yours to make. It is important to ask questions and communication to the dentist your hesitations and concerns so that a workable solution can be found that fits your “specific to you” dental issue. Treatment options are a way of life in our profession.  Even if you cannot manage to have all your dental care done at once, we may be able to provide you with treatment that is done in order of importance or necessity to minimize incurring unnecessary costs from disconnected “patchwork” dentistry.

Understanding your treatment options is key to making confident, well-informed decisions about your individual dental needs. At Your Smile Dental Care we encourage you to look at your long term dental health as an investment in you. We can literally turn back time and restore a mouth that has struggled with many years of patchwork treatment and old, failing dentistry.

You can have youthful looking teeth that are supported by a strong foundation which will serve you for many years to come.

Spend the time to find a dentist you trust so you can enjoy peace-of-mind dental care for many years. Searching for a dentist to care for your teeth and gums can be a simple process if you know where to look!

Your Smile can be Out of this World!

One of our long term patients, Matt Hughes, recently broke a 28 year old Canadian record at this year’s World Track and Field Championships in Moscow and upon learning that he was featured in a popular running magazine we just had to get ourselves down to the local mall and pick ourselves up a copy or two. While strolling through the bookstore we noticed, among the glittery holiday displays, an  area dedicated to astronaut Commander Chris Hadfield’s inspiring new book.

Although his feet are planted firmly on Earth again, Canada’s very own Chris Hadfield became an social media sensation during his recent mission aboard the International Space Station. His online posts on popular sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube became legendary and earthlings began following him in droves. At the time of this post he has almost a million followers from all over the globe on Twitter alone.

He offered us a behind the scene look of his experience aboard the ISS in an informative and entertaining manner and in doing so also captured the hearts of the world. From creating the first music video in space to paying tribute to Boston after the marathon with a touching  photo from space of the city in mourning, Cmdr. Hadfield reached out to the people of earth and captivated us with his charming ways.

So, imagine how pleased we were at Your Smile Dental Care to come across a couple of dental-related posts. It’s hard to find a dentist in space so, how do astronauts keep their pearly whites clean while living in zero gravity? Watch the clip below to find out:

During a the change-of-command ceremony Hadfield told the outgoing station commander, ‘Thank you very much for giving me the keys to the family car. We’re going to put some miles on it, but we’ll bring it back in good shape.’

And that’s how we feel about your teeth at Your Smile Dental Care. Dr. Sam Axelrod and our team of caring professionals want you to know that over your lifetime you will put a lot of miles on your teeth and we hope we can help you keep them in good shape!  While doing so, we invite you to follow us for a behind the scenes look at who we are and what we love to do everyday – Create Beautiful Smiles!

Chris’s stunning space photos captivated us and made us fall in love with our beautiful planet all over again. It reminded us all of the important role we play as caretakers of the Earth. He continues to inspire us in his new book as he writes about how we can turn the impossible into reality.

We make beautiful smiles a reality at Your Smile Dental Care.  And while we can only dream of having the multitude of followers that Chris Hadfield has, we too dream of helping people become efficient caretakers of one of their most important facial features, and in doing so, help them fall in love all over again – with their smiles!

Your Smile can be….Out of this World!

Oshawa Dentist: Our Growth Over the Years

We are proud of our long, distinguished history!

Dr. Sam Axelrod assumed leadership of the dental practice at it’s current location from another dentist in 1990. Based on his experiences in previous dental practices, he immediately set out to build a practice that was an extension of his belief in the tradition of combining family and quality, gentle dentistry – a place where he could build long-lasting, trusting relationships with his patients. To ensure that they would enjoy seeing warm, familiar faces year after year, he directed his attention to building a winning team of experienced staff members who shared his philosophy.

Your Smile Dental Care has grown progressively over the years, always willing to embrace any new technology that would enhance patient comfort and care. The look of the office has evolved as well – most recently with a beautifully remodeled exterior and entrance foyer that complements the warm and inviting look that patients experience while inside the office.

Today, Dr. Sam Axelrod and his team continue to be one of the most established and trusted dental practices in the Durham Region. They have expanded their team to include Dr. Gary Gales who joined the practice in 2003 bringing with him over 30 years of dental experience and Dr. Shawn Young, a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of gum disease. The tradition of family continued when Dr. Axelrod’s daughter, Dr. Elyse Sturm joined the practice in 2008. Sharing a common philosophy and high standard of practice, it was a natural fit.

The patient relationships we have enjoyed over the years now extend to the parents, children and even grandchildren of patients!11-18-2013 4-55-43 PM Our dedication and compassion have inspired some of these patients themselves to seek careers in the dental field.

The Your Smile Dental Care team has seen a lot of changes over the years — both in technologies and treatments — and they continue to embrace and adopt the very best. The one constant, however, is their dedication to serving the needs of every individual patient, over the years and across the generations. We are focused on total patient care.

The team at Your Smile Dental Care is proud to continue the legacy of this long-standing practice and welcome you to join our family!
